Romophos is an honorary based on scholarship, leadership, and service that was founded in 1932. The purpose of Romophos is the betterment of its members and its community. Unable to settle on a creative name for the organization, the founding members chose to spell "sophomore" backwards. With a few changes to help in pronunciation, Romophos was born. It began as an all-male honorary, but became co-ed in 1977. The original initiation included a ritual where "neophytes" dressed in burlap sacks and Turkish fezzes were chained together and marched around campus, praying to the ficticious Roman god, Romo. Obviously, a few changes to the initiation process have been made! More recently, Romophos induction revolved around a candlelight ceremony in which new members had to seal their commitment to the organization with hot wax. Currently, Romophos endeavors to combine aspects of past initiations with a reasonable degree of moderation. While deciding to omit fezzes, burlap sacks, and hot wax, we have nonetheless continued to maintain tradition with the symbolic chain and our reverence for the Romophos Rock.
